How do Jews Love?

Rabbi Shai Held's new book, Judaism Is About Love: Recovering the Heart of Jewish Life, makes the case that centuries of anti-Judaism notwithstanding, Judaism is very much a religion of love. In this Conversation, we'll do two things: 1) probe some of Judaism's core love commandments, and 2) explore some places where Jewish and Christian approaches to love tend to differ, and ask what's at stake in those differences. At a moment like this one, we ought to be especially clear what Judaism is and what it isn't, and about what it does and doesn't stand for.

Rabbi Shai Held– philosopher, theologian, and Bible scholar– is President and Dean at the Hadar Institute. He received the prestigious Covenant Award for Excellence in Jewish Education, and has been named multiple times by Newsweek as one of the fifty most influential rabbis in America and by the Jewish Daily Forward as one of the fifty most prominent Jews in the world. Rabbi Held is the author of Abraham Joshua Heschel: The Call of Transcendence (2013) and The Heart of Torah (2017). His next book, Judaism is About Love, will be published by Farrar, Straus, & Giroux in March 2024.
