The Feminist Mystique: How the Women’s Movement Turned Against Jews and Israel

Feminism has taken many forms over the decades, but how did a movement once centered on equal rights and protection from violence come to embrace ideas that can be harmful to Jews, Jewish women, and Israel?

In this conversation, feminist scholar Kara Jesella traces the evolution of feminism and the competing ideas that have shaped the movement. She’ll explore how we arrived at this moment, and more importantly, ask: Where do Jewish women go from here?

Kara Jesella is a feminist scholar and the author of Feminist Antisemitism: An Intellectual History (Routledge, 2026). A fellow of the Z3 Institute and the London Centre for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism, she has lectured on antisemitism, antizionism, and sexual violence at Harvard University, the University of Cambridge, and many other venues. Jesella has a PhD and an MA in Performance Studies from New York University, where she was the Managing Editor of Women’s Performance: a journal of feminist theory, and a BA in Women’s Studies and English from Vassar College. A former journalist, she has written and edited for the New York Times, Ms., Tablet and many other publications, and authored a cultural history that was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. She lives in New York City.
